With the new school year getting ready to start, just how many illegal immigrant children who have stayed in Texas will wind up going to Texas schools? The answer isn’t as simple as you might think.

According to the numbers, 4,200 of the kids that have crossed into the country illegally have stayed in Texas. Debbie Ratcliffe of the Texas Education Agency says taxpayers will foot the $9,200 bill per kid, but no one knows how many will show up.

“We haven’t been told how many kids to expect. We don’t know where they’ll end up. There are a lot of unanswered questions,” Ratcliffe said. “But if they’re here, they are our kids and we will educate them. They are paid for with a combination of state, federal and local funds.”

Some are asking if these kids have their shots up to date. Anna Dragsbaek of The Immunization Partnership you should be more worried about Texas parents not immunizing their kids because of growing concerns about autism and other side effects.

“In many cases these kids are better immunized because they have nationalized health care in their countries of origin,” Dragsbaek explained. “They should not let that concern them.”

How will this impact your child's education? Ratcliffe says it could be minimal here.

“We could see some increased class sizes, especially in border districts,” Ratcliffe stated.

And will this slow down the learning process, with teachers devoting time to children that don’t have command of English?

“Mexican immigrants come to us with some level of education. But Central American children often come with no education whatsoever,” Ratcliffe said.

The problem could get worse when the temperatures start to cool down. There are some are warning more kids will cross illegally after the summer ends.
