Hurricane Tour Experts Stop in Houston

The top hurricane expert in the U.S. says we shouldn't focus so much attention on the strength of a storm -- like a Category-5 hurricane or an EF-4 tornado.  Dr. Rick Knabb says when people get ready for the hurricane season starting next month, then need to be thinking about what the storm can do to them and their family.

“We need to focus on the hazards, the wind and the water hazards, and not focus too much on the category or the type of system you may be facing,” Knabb says.  “There's no such thing as ‘just a tropical storm.’  Look what Allison did in the Houston area in 2001.”

Knabb is director of the National Hurricane Center.  He says Houston residents should be focused on four things -- do you live in an evacuation zone, are you insured, do you have plenty of supplies stored and have you done all you can to make your home as safe as possible against the effects of severe weather.

He says there is one main thing you should be thinking of – first.

“Find out today where you're going to go and how you're going to get there,” he says, “and what supplies you would need to take with you and what you're going to need to do to your home before you leave."
