A study says the average American spends $400 a month on work-related expenses; things like fuel, clothes, birthday gifts and co-workers kids' cookies and candy.
University of Houston business Professor Dennis Adams says that's a hefty amount.
"I gotta think that $400 a month is probably more than most people think they're spending."
In light of it, Professor Adams says maybe business school teachers should include work expenses.
"We probably don't spend enough time talking about the cost of commuting and then the social cost of work with gifts and Girl Scout cookies and all of those other things. We probably don't prepare them very well for the total package."
Professor Adams says his weakness is Girl Scout cookies.
"Once a year when the Girl Scouts come by selling cookies, because I'm going to clean them out of the chocolate mint cookies because they're just wonderful and that probably tilts my average a whole lot."
