The longtime public face of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is resigning.  Rodeo vice president and chief operating officer Leroy Shafer will step aside in September, when he turns 70.

Shafer has been with the organization for 40 years, and will stay active with the rodeo as a consultant.  He also plans to continue his work as a media liaison.

“Shafe” has played an integral role in improving attendance numbers since he joined the organization in 1973; gate numbers had stagnated since the mid-60’s and HLSR officials decided to bring their marketing efforts in-house.

A record 2.5-million people attended last year, second nationally to the Texas State Fair, which drew nearly 2.6-million in 2013.

The 2014 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo kicks off with a downtown parade March 1st.  The show runs from March 4-23 at Reliant Park.
