Home Cooking: Cruz wins GOP Straw Poll

US Senator Ted Cruz is the clear favorite among Republicans in the reddest of red states.

Cruz claimed 43.4-percent of the vote in a presidential straw poll at the GOP state convention in Fort Worth.  He got more than three times the support of second place finisher Ben Carson.  The retired neurosurgeon got 12.2-percent.

Governor Rick Perry finished fourth with 11.7-percent.  Kentucky Senator Rand Paul was third.

While he has not officially announced his candidacy, Cruz may be building momentum for a presidential run in 2016.  He also finished first in a straw poll at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans last week.

Delegates also voted on the party platform, a series of non-binding resolutions that guide the principles of the party.  Immigration and homosexuality garnered most of the attention.

They voted to reverse language adopted two years ago that endorsed a guest worker program for people who are in the country illegally.

Language on homosexuality was also modified.  In the past, the platform read that a gay lifestyle “tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit.”  It now reads that it is a “chosen behavior that is contrary to the fundamental unchanging truths.”  However, delegates also approved language from a committee meeting that endorses “reparative therapy”, a form of psychological treatment that aims to turn gay people straight.

More than 11,000 people attended the weekend convention, which ended Saturday.
