Focused Approach Easing Homeless Situation

Houston city officials say a concentrated effort to end chronic homelessness is having an impact.  An online database makes placement easier for those who help people without a permanent residence.  Mayor Annise Parker says the approach to dealing with the problem was fragmented in the past.  Now, there’s an online database to help with placement.

"(It) Shows which housing communities the individual qualifies for,” Parker explains.  “It shows real-time availability of beds and, actually on-site it can reserve a bed.”

The mayor says she doesn't want to build more shelters.

“I do not want to do anything that makes it easier for someone to stay on the street,” she says, “than to be in a safe, humane environment.”
