Collision in Ship Channel Spills Oil
Posted Sunday, March 23rd 2014 @ 9am  by KTRH's Theran Nicholas

Another collision in the Houston ship channel has occurred, this time spilling some 160,000 gallons of oil.

The U.S. Coast Guard says this is a serious spill and the oil will spread.  Right now traffic in the section of the channel near Texas City between the Intracoastal Waterway to lighter buoy 32 has been suspended.

The U.S. Coast Guard has closed the Texas City Dike and all surrounding parks until officials consider the area safe.

Officials have not yet begun to say what the cause of the collision was but say that fog could have been a factor since we are in fog season.  This is the second major collision in the past week.

Last weekend a barge carrying oil and a cargo ship carrying rice collided in the Texas City Y area though no oil was spilled from that barge.
