Popping more champagne corks may help counteract memory loss linked with aging. Medicalexpress.com says scientists at University of Reading have determined that drinking one to three glass of champagne per week can improve spatial memory. Phenolic compounds in the bubbly alter proteins in the brain associated with storing memory, which are known to deplete as people age. Because champagne has high levels of these compounds, it can help slow the loss of those proteins.
Professor Jeremy Spencer of the University of Reading calls the results "exciting." He adds that this is the first time research has shown that "moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning." Previous research has shown that red wine has a similar effect on brain function.
